A Tree Planted by Water

The analogy of a tree planted by water is a beautiful picture of a flourishing life.  It reminds us of the importance of trusting in God, this can come from meditating on the Word of God and acting upon it.  Like when a tree is flourishing, you see the leaves green and the fruit on its branches the condition of our lives can also be seen by the fruit in our lives and the evidence of growth and health seen by our outward behaviour.  The verse in Jeremiah reminds us of the importance of having our roots deep in the Word, for when the storms come we are able to withstand trouble, for our foundations are deep in the Word of God.

Jeremiah 17:7-9 – “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lordwhose confidence is in him.  They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.  It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.  It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”  The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.  Who can understand it.  10 “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”

Psalm 1:1-3 – Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,  but whose delight is in the law of the Lordand who meditates on his law day and night.  That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

Matthew 7:24-28 – “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
