Anzac Story – Bible and the Bullet

Many believers have found salvation in the word of God, but none so literally as Elvas Jenkins.

It was a Bible that stopped a lead shrapnel bullet ripping through the heart of the young Lance-Corporal on the shores of Gallipoli during that doomed campaign in 1915.

The bullet tore into his French New Testament but was stopped by the gospel pages of the tiny bible which he carried in his shirt pocket.

Jenkins was one of the first to land at Anzac Cove and one of the last to be evacuated. He survived the Gallipoli campaign to die on the Western Front, then a 2nd Lieutenant.

One hundred years later, Sydneysiders can see the bullet is still nestled in the pages that saved the young digger’s life as part of the “Their Sacrifice”, a year-long exhibition touring Australia.

The Bible will join nine others that belonged to Anzac soldiers whose dramatic stories will be told through the exhibition, which uses video, sound and animations.
