D is for Dream

The ability to dream is powerful… we can daydream and we can dream at night.  We can envisage new things and ponder what could be… Here are some thoughts from the Word about dreams.

God can speak through dreams to us.

  • Then He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream.  (Num. 12:6)
  • Ablimelech was warned in a dream regarding Abraham’s wife (Gen 20:3,6)
  • Pilate’s wife was also warned in a dream.  (Matt 27:19)
  • Jacob had a heavenly dream (Gen 28:12, 31:10-11)
  • Laban was advised through a dream (Gen 31:24)
  • Joseph dreamed of his future and got into strife through sharing it with his family. (Gen 37)
  • Gideon was encouraged through a dream. (Judg. 7, 1 Ki 3:5,)
  • Saul was greatly distressed when God stopped speaking to him, even by dream (1 Sam. 28)
  • Solomon was spoken to through a dream (1 Ki 3:15)
  • Job felt terrified by God in a dream (Job 7:14)
  • Joseph was spoken to in a dream. ( 2:19, 22)

Dreams can be interpreted

  • Joseph interprets dreams (Gen. 40 and 41)
  • Pharoah dreamed the same dream twice which meant that God had established what was going to happen (Gen 41)
  • Daniel was able to interpret dreams ( Dan. 1:17,2)
  • But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed, were these: (Dan. 2:28)

The dream should line up with the Word of God

  • If it doesn’t then don’t follow it ( 13:1-5)
  • There are such things as false dreams (10:2)
  • God is against those who prophesy false dreams.  (Jer 23:25-32)
  • Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries. (Jude 1:8)

Dreams fly away once you have them

  • This is likened to the life of the wicked (Job 20:8)

It is a blissful state when one is able to dream

  • Psalm 126:1 – [ A Joyful Return to Zion ] [ A Song of Ascents. ] When the Lord brought back the captivity of Zion, We were like those who dream.

Time of dreams

  • Job 33:15  – In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while slumbering on their beds, 16  Then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction.
  • Ecclesiastes 5:3 – For a dream comes through much activity, And a fool’s voice is known by his many words.
  • Psalm 73:20 – As a dream when one awakes, So, Lord, when You awake, You shall despise their image.
  • Ecclesiastes 5:7 – For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.
  • Isaiah 29:8 – It shall even be as when a hungry man dreams, And look—he eats; But he awakes, and his soul is still empty; Or as when a thirsty man dreams, And look—he drinks; But he awakes, and indeed he is faint, And his soul still craves: So the multitude of all the nations shall be, Who fight against Mount Zion.

Daniel interpreted dreams (Daniel 2:36, 2:45, Daniel 4)   and also had dreams of his own (Daniel 7) Inasmuch as an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, solving riddles, and explaining enigmas were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar, now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation.” (Daniel 5:12)

In the last days God has promised that young men would see visions, and old men dream dreams.

  • Acts 2:17 – ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dream (Also Joel 2:26)
