Teaching with Heart
Mr. Kanamori, a teacher of a 4th grade class, teaches his students not only how to be students, but how to live. He gives them lessons on teamwork, community, the importance of openness, how to cope, and the harm caused by bullying.
In the award-winning documentary Children Full of Life, produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, a fourth-grade class in a primary school in Kanazawa, northwest of Tokyo, learn lessons about compassion from their homeroom teacher, Toshiro Kanamori.
He instructs each to write their true inner feelings in a letter, and read it aloud in front of the class. By sharing their lives, the children begin to realize the importance of caring for their classmates.
Toshiro is an amazing example of what all teachers across the world should be like. He truly understands what teaching children is all about and certainly made a positive difference in the lives of these 10 year olds. Star Teacher writes, “As you watch this video it causes you to think about what true teaching is. As parents, teachers, pastors even coaches, we interact with our young people. It is so important not to teach theory separate from practice, but this video really challenges what that looks like.” As Christians we do not live life in isolation to others, but we are called to be part of a family, a church, a body. Teaching our young people to be empathetic, compassionate and aware of others is an important life lesson which I believe the Holy Spirit can give us insights into how we do this.

1. God is compassionate God
- Exodus 33:19 – The Lord replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.
- Exodus 34:6 – The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.
- 2 Chronicles 36:15 – The Lord,the God of their ancestors, repeatedly sent his prophets to warn them, for he had compassion on his people and his Temple.
- Psalm 25:6 – Remember, O Lord, your compassion and unfailing love, which you have shown from long ages past.
